About this blog

I started to write this blog in May 2006. It was done as an experiment as I really couldn’t believe that anyone would want to read anything that I had to say. That has turned out to be largely true, but over time I have found my own uses for this blog and if others read it and comment that’s a welcome bonus.

The blog has evolved into a forum for me to write notes to myself about learning German. I do occasionally write about other topics, but this is not a focus.

I started learning German following a trip to Berlin in March 2007 and I have written about why I learn German here. In the early days of my learning I was close to giving up; “This is just too hard”. However thanks to the encouragement of a number of people I persevered. I travelled again to Berlin in October 2007, September 2008 and summer 2009. I plan to spend June 2010 in Berlin.

I decided to write about the ups and downs of learning so that I could look back over my writings in future down times and see how far I had progressed. I also decided that I would write about it in public, that is on this blog. I thought that maybe others struggling with learning German might find my experiences enlightening or encouraging.

Now I am committed to learning to speak German fluently.  It’s going to take years and years, but I don’t care.  I have so much fun with it; meeting people, new ideas, cultural differences… I find it all exciting.

So there you have it the story of my blog. For those who are interested here’s some basic information about me:

I was born in Melbourne Australia, and this is where I now live. I work in IT (user support and network administration) in the not-for-profit sector. I can tend to live a lot of my life on the Internet, however am not an “Internet” hermit. I do get out. Oh, and I am permanently single.
